House No. 334: Why a Flower Surprise in Thailand Needs More Than an Address

Illustration: a driver looking for the right house in the Thai countryside.
My little hut in the middle of a rice field has a house number. When I went to get one, the village headman told me to choose the number I liked. I wanted 333, but someone already had it, so I took 334.
Now imagine sending flowers to House No. 334. You have the house number, the village, and the subdistrict. The address looks complete. Would a driver who has never been there find my hut?
Probably not. And that is the problem with many surprise deliveries in Thailand.
Why a complete address may not be enough
Some addresses are easy to find, such as a well-known hotel or office building. Others are not, especially outside the big cities:
- House numbers may not follow the road. No. 334 may be nowhere near No. 333.
- Homes are not always in neat rows. In the countryside, people build where their family has land, so houses can be far apart.
- One subdistrict can cover a very wide area. Local florists have told us plainly that without a map pin or a phone number, they cannot find the house.
This may be different from what you are used to at home. An address that looks perfect on your screen may not get a driver to the right door.
Be as creative as you like, but give us enough to work with
We love a good surprise. Your recipient does not need to know the flowers are coming, but the florist and the driver need to know where to go and who to contact.
Please do not enter your own phone number in the recipient's phone field. It may get you through checkout, but when the driver needs directions, the call goes to you, not to anyone who can point the way.
What to give us
Add these details in Special instructions at checkout. The more you can share, the better:
- A Google Maps pin. Open Google Maps on your phone, touch and hold the exact location until a pin appears, then tap Share and paste the link.
- A nearby landmark, such as a temple, school, or shop.
- A phone number that works. Use your recipient's number, or the number of a friend or relative who can keep the secret.
- A good time to deliver, such as "usually home from work around 5:30 pm."
- A backup plan, such as a workplace or someone who can accept the flowers.
Don't know the exact location? Ask a friend or relative who has been there.
If we have neither a pin nor a phone number, we may need to contact your recipient first, which can give the surprise away. If we still can't locate them, we may have to cancel the order.
If we need to call
We use the recipient's phone number to confirm the address or arrange delivery. If the flowers are a surprise, tell us in Special instructions. We will try to keep the surprise, but we can't promise it. Sometimes a call to ask the way is all it takes for someone to guess.
You can also ask us not to call your recipient at all. Please understand that this makes a successful delivery harder to confirm, and in that case, the risk of a failed delivery rests with you.
If the surprise doesn't go to plan
Fresh flowers can't wait. If the address is incorrect, we can't reach your recipient, or no one is there and the flowers can't be left with anyone, we will return them to our shop. They may not survive a second trip.
If you would like a new delivery or a new arrangement, any additional cost is at your expense. These cases may also not qualify for a refund. Please read our Terms and Refund Policy before you order.
So before you plan a surprise with very little information, ask yourself whether you are comfortable with that risk. If not, a few more details can make all the difference.
If your recipient lives outside the city
- Style: In smaller towns, a bouquet may be simpler than what you see in the city, and some flowers or foliage may not be available. If we need to make a change, we will contact you first.
- Delivery fees: Delivery is free within Bangkok and provincial capital districts within a 25 km radius. We generally measure upcountry distances from the provincial capital district, though a few major towns may be treated differently. Beyond that range, additional shipping fees may apply, so please contact us for a quote.
- Order early: Even if there is a flower shop or a big store in your recipient's town, the flowers available there may differ from those in the provincial capital. If you can, order one or two days ahead. This gives the local florist time to find the right flowers and arrange delivery.
- Timing: Tell us your preferred time and we will do our best, but we can't guarantee an exact delivery time.
- Payment: If your delivery area needs confirmation from a local florist, checkout will tell you before you pay. In that case, your card is held, not charged, and we confirm within 48 hours. If we can't deliver, the hold is released at no cost.
Your surprise checklist
Before you place your order, make sure you have:
- The recipient's full name and address
- A Google Maps pin, plus a nearby landmark if you can
- A working phone number that is not your own
- A time when your recipient is likely to be there
- A backup location or person
- A note telling us the flowers are a surprise
And if you ever send flowers to House No. 334, please include a pin. Otherwise, the driver will have to call me for directions, and there goes your surprise.
